Now let me begin by sharing a bit about me!
What am I working on? I am in the process of getting the word out on my first book, Bully Maze Finding A Way Out. Bullying is so pervasive in our schools and communities, and as an elementary school principal I saw first- hand how bullying can be stopped when parents, teachers and community leaders work together. I wanted to share the strategies that really can help kids who are stuck in the painful maze of bullying. Bullying doesn't just hurt one child, it can infect entire schools, families and communities when not properly addressed. And the sad truth is that most people just don't know where to begin in their drive to put an end to bullying. This is a simple to follow and easy to use guide for helping kids. It just takes one adult to reach out and make the difference in the life of a child in need.
How does my work differ from others of its genre? I create small books that solve big problems. The life of a parent is already busy and many don't have time to pour over lengthy self-help books. . I want to give parents and teachers the skills they need to make life better for school age children, using simple effective strategies. My books are short, to the point and filled with easy to understand and apply information. I know that after a parent reads my book they will have the skills they need to help their child; be they the bully or the victim.
There is one other important element which differentiates my books from those of other authors. I recognize that initiating a conversation with a child about school issues like bullying, friendship demands or problems with a teacher, can be a tough thing to do. Because of this I include a list of appropriate story books that parents can read with their child to ease into a conversation. Sharing a story like The Recess Queen, allows kids to experience the school bully without fear. They can compare their experiences, share how they feel and talk about ways to make things better, all within the safety of their own living room. It's so important to be able to have open discussions with your kids; reading a story together is a great way to kick start the dialogue!
Why do I write what I do? I spent over 37 years in education working with students from pre-school through college. I saw what happens when a child never receives skills necessary to change their life. Child sized bullies quickly grow into unhappy adult bullies. I also saw what happens when parents and teachers do not have the tools that they need to successfully guide a child to adulthood. Because of these experiences I launched my first book focusing on bullying.
For years I would freely share my ideas, philosophies and strategies with parents and teachers and frequently I heard back that they left our conversations feeling more confident and prepped with the skills and insights that they needed to better help their child. We talked about homework challenges , concerns about teachers, everyday school struggles and many more issues that challenge today's parents. Many a parent, and even more teachers, encouraged me to share my thoughts in books; and so I did!
How does my writing process work? I actually began formulating ideas on future books throughout my last five years of working as an elementary school principal. Once retired, I immediately jumped into the writing of Bully Maze. During my first year of retirement I also wrote Bath, Book & Bed, Parent/Teacher Conferences: What Every Parent & Teacher Should Know and Homework Hang-Ups. As you can see from the titles, my books focus on helping parents with philosophies, skills and strategies to help them to better navigate through their child's early school years. After completing each book I sent each book to teachers, parents and other principals for their critique. This process is time consuming but assured that the information was concise, appropriately communicated, understandable and easy to follow.
As I continue to get the word out on Bully Maze, I am also enhancing my website www.project-parenting.com and blogging most days. I hope that you will stop by my website to take a look.
