But the joy of this book is not to be found in the pictures alone. The book begins with a statement that I think every parent feels the first time they look at their newborn:
When I look at you
And you look at me
I wonder what wonderful
Things you will be
And ends some pages later with:
Then you’ll discover
All there is to see…
And become anybody you’d like to be
And then I’ll look at you
And you’ll look at me
And I’ll love you
Whoever you’ve grown up to be.
My daughter turned 27 years old today. And she is someone that I am so proud of, as I am of all of my children. As a parent we all wonder if we are doing the right thing. Are we too harsh, too easy, giving them the support they need or enough room to grow. And with each child, our journeys differ.
Perhaps you might consider giving this book to your newborn someday. If you do, read it often and keep it safe.
Or maybe you will be fortunate like I was to receive it from your grown up child who grew into somebody you are so proud of. I think that I’ll keep this book and share it someday when she has kids.
